Year 5

Creeping Coastlines

In our new topic we will be finding out about the changing coastline

In year 5 we love our coastlines and the creatures that live in and around the sea but we have discovered that we are not looking after them as well as we could. We wrote letters to David Cameron to make our viewpoints clear.

Dear Primeminister,
Did you know how much of the marine life has been killed by fishermen? I am writing to you about all these innocent, poor coastline creatures and sea mammals. I’m concerned about these creatures aren't you? They’re suffering through many things, that shouldn't happen to any living animal.

Fish is yummy but it’s about time we cut down on all the fish we catch each year. The fishermen aren't saving enough fish for the next year! These unfortunate fish are losing their family we can still eat fish but let’s leave a few left in the sea before there will be none left.

Another problem is the nasty oil and rubbish in the ocean. All the rubbish gets stuck up in all animals necks and can kill and cut them. Why do people chuck horrible chemicals and other flammable things down the toilet? They will cause more animals in danger. Does everyone really want these poor, helpless sea creatures and coastline mammals to suffer through this? I know I don’t.

Our cool seas creatures are always disturbed and harmed by people and our activities often by accident. Enjoy our marine wildlife and let them live happily  and in peace! Some of the sea creatures like Whales, Dolphins and Basking Sharks they’re all protected by law, so no one should disturb them.

Now do you understand that the marine wild life is very important. Do you agree with me that we should make a difference? We  need  to make sure this happens or else none of the sea animals or the coastline creatures will have a good life. Also why don’t we treat sea creatures and coastline mammals a little bit better? Please think about this. Maybe you’ll be the first to make a difference for the marine wildlife?
Yours sincerely
Rubi

Dear Prime Minister,
I am writing to you about the disgraceful standard of protection and care that is given to marine wildlife and appalled that you put up with it! You can change it and need to before marine wildlife becomes history. At the minute all it represents is sadness and destruction. You do care don’t you?

At the minute animals are leading shorter, sad and destructive lives. The fact that this is allowed is shameful. But if we just listened to each other we could all get our way. Fishermen are getting hungry for the money and as a result are becoming impatient. It may not sound like much but fish’s future depends on it. If they caught less fish they could breed over time so the fish have a longer life and the fishermen get lots of fish without being destructive of their future.

Pollution. The word brings sadness and destruction. It makes me vivid to know that we can change things for the better but our voices aren't being heard and I'm going to make them. People put nasty things down the drain that will hurt or kill marine wildlife. Why do it when we have bins? What supposed joy does it bring? Someone else’s bad choice destroys a life somewhere and we need that to change!

Sea creatures, does nobody care? Poor defenceless animals everywhere are being hurt and maybe even killed! But why?! We really should be more careful and have a lot more care! I saw a turtle lying on the beach with a big cut along his back! Animals don’t deserve it and I need help to make it stop.

So I need urgent help to make my voice heard because it’s disgraceful and it can’t go on. Marine wildlife’s future is in danger and we can change it! They can’t speak for themselves so I’ll speak for them and I say it needs to stop!!!
Kind regards

S Mackness

Dear Primeminister,
What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh, of course! The unfortunate truth is, there are lots of lovely sea creatures living under the same circumstances as this. I fell that their treatment is appalling. They’re feeble fish, they can’t speak for themselves. So I shall have to do it for them.

Pollution and oil spills have devastated our waters for decades. It is astonishing how many passers-by throw waste into the water without a second glance. You need to raise awareness of this issue and reduce it. Nearly 30% of the world’s beautiful coral reefs are either dead or dying because of this issue. Have you considered placing cameras around the sea to see and fine all the people that throw rubbish in the ocean?

Illegal fishing purposely takes place every half hour. I think that that is terrible, don’t you? If these fish don’t get a chance to breed, then I dare say we may run out soon enough.

Global warming is also a problem. The UK will get a reputation for this if we don’t stop. Scotland is one of the worst countries for this issue. It is getting worse by the minute. I think more dustbins should be placed near the coast.
Coral reefs are a vital part of this country. If we had none of them then we would be well and truly stuck. We rely on them for tourists, which bring vital money to our economy, medicine for the seriously ill and food. Need I say more?

Marine conservation is falling fast, and although you think it won’t affect you, trust me, it will. If I am the only one who cares, then so be it. But please, act fast.

Yours sincerely,
Carmen

Descriptions of the coast

We did some descriptive writing about our experiences of the coast, trying to describe what makes it special.

A DAY AT THE BEACH!

As I sunbathe in the warmth in the summer holiday I forget about my troubles and worries. I see birds flying round, I see the tide flying up which means we have to leave. As I walk on the beach looking for a beautiful glimpse of a sea shell I find one. I’m happy. We go home I put it on the table and time for bed!

A DAY AT THE SEA SIDE

As I sit back and close my eyes, the sound of the wavy blue sea with that of the sea gulls, it made forget about mistakes and made me relaxed.
When I got an ice cream, the sweetness swirling around my mouth with the coldness shivering down my throat, I love the sound of the shiny blue sea smashing against the rocks with the noise of the sea gulls zooming past me. My feet pushing into the golden sand tickles me all around and it just feels like me and the sea side.

As I run on the beach, the wonderful sun warming me through the peaceful day.

I forgot about all my troubles, and I feel relaxation all over me.

The sand yellow as can be.

I really like the rides and once I'm on a ride the fun never stops.

The seaside

I love the seaside, it’s one of my favourite places to go. I love it when the splashing of the deep, blue sea collides with your ears and hypnotises you, somehow, to go for a long, cooling, swim. The waves drag you back and push you forth, swallowing the bitter salt water and scraping your feet on the smooth shells. You go back to your warm, sunbed and devour the finest, fresh fish and the crispiest chips, as the ultra violet rays hit your wet skin and turn it to a lovely light brown colour. In the distance you can hear the sounds of the harbour and the barking of seagulls. The boats float along the ocean with ease, like a ballroom dancer on an ice floor. They bring in catch and carry away your worries, as your dreams float of to the cloudless, seagull filled skies.

COAST LINES

I love the beach, the salty sea air, the wind in your face and the crisp sun beating down on your back. The sweet creamy ice cream melting on your tongue. Suddenly you could come across a shell, a bright colourful shell and when you pick it up the golden sand covers your fingers.
As we set the towels down I get sight of the sea, the bright glistening turquoise sea. While my parents sunbathe I go down to the shore to explore.
I adore the waves, you could sit watching them for hours!
As I happily wander to the shoreline the gentle waves froth around my toes.
When I wander back the soft, warm, creamy sand sprinkles my toes.
Then for fish and chips. The freshly caught fish and the golden crispy chips warmed my mouth. The dessert was a delicious whippy ice cream with raspberry sauce and a flake. As the raspberry sauce slips down my throat I felt glad to be at sea side!

On the beach

As I relax on a sunbed I feel like a giraffe in the safari, I watch the waves on the sea, they look like a python snake going up and down and when I turn around and then look back they get closer and closer. When I stand up the cool breeze hits me like a fan on its highest level, it makes me put all my troubles at school behind me and makes me focus on what is happing.  I love it when the sand sprinkles through my toes, it makes me feel relaxed.
I float in the sea which is like I am in heaven and I can see the birds flying high up in the light blue sky and you hear the chirping which when you are on holiday is almost as good as one direction’s music
Then when I am back on shore I quickly grab my bucket and spade and build my dream castle which has a shell door and some green, strange seaweed. Then I have my striking, amazing sandcastle.
When the days nearly done I have some fish and chips from the fish and chips stall and the annoying thing is the birds always try to nick a chip or two.
That is my amazing time at the beach and as the sky goes darker my feet walk away as fast as a snail

The seaside

One morning , I went to the seaside to find seashells when I find some under the sand. When I came to the seaside , I play with friends as I lie on the beach, the beautiful sun warming me through. The seaside is fun and you can do everything on the beach, I love swimming in the sea.

On the beach!!!!

As I lie on the beach, the beautiful sun warming through my body, I forgot all about work and felt really relaxed.

You can see lots of things on the beach but my favourite things are, the amazing sea splashing on the sand, the soft yellow golden sand lying on the beach, the crazy people crowding the place, all the different ice-cream flavours you can eat, all the colourful umbrellas to keep the sun away from you, the sparkling fancy bikinis and colourful swimming trunks and last of all the amazing colourful horizon.

There are lots of things you could touch so I am only going to tell you a few; I love touching the golden yellow sand, the beautiful blue sea to swim in, lovely vanilla ice-cream to eat and people just in case you have to put sun cream on them.

You can smell nearly everything on the beach but these are the main things, the sea salt, you can smell this when you go in the sea and the food, the lovely food.

There are not many things you can taste on the beach these are the main ones, ice-cream, sea salt and food, there’s not many but it does not matter.

You can’t hear a lot of things on the beach these are some, seagulls making noise in the air and people having fun that’s about all of them.

The thing I love about the beach are sun bathing so I get a tan, I love flying my granddad's kites because it is fun and volleyball the best beach game ever.

the amazing seaside

The seaside! I love the seaside.
I love it when the sand sprinkles through your toes, like golden glitter.
The fish and chips are the best when you into the crispy batter and into the soft fish its heaven.
When the cold small breeze hits your face like an electric fan and through your hair you fell like a superstar.
It’s as if you’re your famous or magical.
It's lovely when the kids are squealing at the cold sea and playing games, having fun
But sometimes I just want sit in front of the sea and listen to it lollop about and crash and it’s just amazing.
I never want to leave but I always have to so when I walk away I walk so slow like a snail
And go home and just hope to go back tomorrow.

THE BEACH

As I lie on the beach, I close my eyes and I listen to all the sounds, it was so relaxing, the hot sun warming my back up. The smell was delicious, especially the food, just not the sea salt smell. crabs, the sea, the sand and lots more things. I can see the sea, the sand, people, seagulls and quite a lot more. I especially like the sun and burying my sister in the sand!

The beach

As I lie on the beautiful sunny beach and I forgotten about my bucket so I grabbed that and I made the best sand castle.
Then I looked at the sea and saw some massive rock pools so I ran to them with my bucket and caught a lot of cool things like fish and massive crabs so I put them back and went for a sun bathe looking at the massive waves.

The day at the beach

As walk along the beach licking the creamy fabulous sensation that is ice cream! AS I just finished my ice cream there was a beach soccer game going on I joined in I really enjoyed it because I was against older people and I picked up a very good touch on the ball and I picked up a lot of tricks from beach soccer. After that I my mum dad and two brothers went to get fish chip and hot dogs it was exquisitely delicious! After 15 minutes we went in the pool it was very refreshing we finished in the pool so me and my dad went to play beach volley ball after 30 minutes or so my uncles and aunties showed up so we went into teams me and my dad vs. my two uncles we thrashed them. The reason I really enjoyed it because it was a really good exercise after that me and my dad went to get a victory prize ice cream and the for the rest of the day I made sand model with my little cousin her favourite  Disney character I really enjoyed my day at the beach!

As I sunbathe on the beach, with the sun tanning me, I’m not worrying about anything I feel so relaxed with all the sounds. I smell lots of things like sea salt I feel it tickling through my nose like a herd of ants.
I can taste the cold refreshing ice cream in my mouth melting away. I can also hear seagulls flapping their wings like the waves clashing together. The grains of sand are like tiny grains of sugar.
The sun is like a yellow beach ball I the sky. The horizon is like the sea is never ending. The tide is like a bird flying up.
I love the seaside!!!

My Holiday In Paradise

My holiday in paradise is amazing,
As I lie on the beach with the sun in my eyes,
Sunbathing in a heat wave having fun just relaxing,
The smell of the sea salt and the warmth of the sun,
I can feel the sand on the tips of my toes,
Best of all I love the swimming in the sea,
The shells are from pearls that belong to the queen of England,
The clouds are sugary candyfloss,
The sea is like a mirror so clear so shiny,
The sun is a banana lollypop that has been bitten through.

Lottie

The Coast

When I got on the beach me and my friend went in to the sea and we found a jelly fish and we ran out then this lady came to us and said the jelly fish don’t sting so we went back in the sea and we got 50 jelly fish and I got a very big one it was bigger than my two hands!

After we went on the peddle boat and we got stuck on the rope and it took us half an hour to get out and people gave us a football to play with but when we got it my cousin threw it back to them, they gave it back to us but after we were out of time and we had to take the boat back.
After we played with the football that the people gave us and I won 10-5 but I went easy on him because he wasn’t very good but a shame we had to go home but my mum brought us ice cream.

I liked it because I have never had a friend come with me to the beach with me and we could play games for two!

the beach

As I swim in the sea the waves hit the shore with excitement  Later on I was eating the most delicious ice cream you have ever tasted, once you had one you couldn't stop, it was fabulous. After a tiring swim in the sea I decided to get a nice tan on my back, listening  to the seagulls and sea was relaxing and made it the best day ever. The sun, is as hot as the oven it burns my back, it sits in the clear blue sky.

I wish it was like this at home I thought.

The beach

When I lie down on a sunbed and sunbathe, I feel relaxed and chilled out because I can hear the ocean clashing against the sand and that sound is beautiful. I splash into the sea and feel all happy and bubbly and as I fall back the waves take me across the sea, it was like no one was around it was just me and the ocean.

The beach

As I lie on the beach, listening to the ocean, creeping into my ears like my very own sound track, I just sit back and relax.

Ahhhh nothing to worry about no one to worry about and best of all no school!

When I’m in the sea there is no doubt you won’t have fun it’s the best.

Sean

As I swim in the sparkling deep blue ocean all my worries about school float away, I look out into the sea until I meet with the horizon line. Then I slowly float back to the coast and there’s the beautiful beach where my mum’s sunbathing, I run to her grab my bucket and spade and make a sand mansion with a moat and a seashell as a bridge. I get some rocks and seaweed and then I cover them in seaweed and pretend they were bushes. I sat by my sand castle and dreamed about swimming out to the horizon line.

Coastal questions

In class we discussed our experiences of the coast, there were a few things that we decided we wanted to find out, here are some of our coastal questions:

Are there manmade coastlines?
How old are coastlines?
What are the populations of different coastlines?
How do animal populations vary on coastlines?
What is a current?
What does a current do?
How does grass grow on sand?
How is sand made?
How dangerous are coasts?
Why are some coasts rocky and some not?
Where did the water in the sea come from?
Where do rocks come from?
How are cliffs made?
How did the water get salt in it?
Why are cliffs made of chalk?
Why do you get patterns in the sand?
Why is it called the coast?
Why do people live by the coast?
Do ciffs fall down when there is an earthquake?
How come the sea is so strong?
How can the sea be strong enough to make landscapes collapse?
Why does salt from the sea make your body sting?
Why isn’t there a place where the world ends?

THEME PARK DESIGNERS
In Year 5 we have been designing our own theme parks. We began by thinking of the theme for our park and what would make it unique.  We then decided on a location for our theme park by looking at maps of our local area. We then filled out planning applications, trying to make sure we kept the local residents happy!

These are our theme park maps to ensure visitors can navigate their way around.
